The heart of our project is the residency program, in which we invite five artists to enter into a dialogue with scientists and with one another and to create artistic works.
Artists
First studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon and is recently studying in the master's programme at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. In his works, the artist deals with physical fragility and illness, working both sculpturally and performatively. For his research in Jena, he will collaborate with the University's Department of Clinical Psychology and the Hans Knöll Institute.
First studied fine art and architecture in St. Petersburg and art studies in Moscow before moving to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts to study art and digital media. In her work, she considers the interactions between science and politics and political decision-making in light of debates in the media. In addition, she questions what ethical standards apply in science. In Jena, she will collaborate with the researchers of KomRex.
Studied fine arts, fashion design and dance in Berlin and London. She also studied psychology in Trier and completed a research internship on biological psychology. In Jena she will combine all her disciplines: Based on her collaboration with the Department of Clinical Psychology, D.O.M and the IMPULS research consortium she will produce sculptural works as well as a performance. Her work will focus on the sensory perception of patients with mental illness.
As native of South Korea, Nahye Gu studied arts and crafts and contemporary art at Konkuk University Seoul. In her artistic work, she deals intensively with the theme of spatial experience, focusing on technological developments of the 21st century such as virtual reality. In Jena, she will explore the question of how disease-causing bacteria learn from their human host. For this purpose, she will cooperate with researchers at the Hans Knöll Institute. The end result will be an installation based on digitally augmented perception.
Studied fine arts, mathematics and teaching in Weimar and Jena with a stay abroad in Portugal. In her mostly sculptural works made of steel and textiles she tries to create contradictions and irritations and often humorously questions the obsession with functioning and optimizing. As part of our project, she will collaborate with the Department of Biological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Jena, exploring how perception and the human brain function. Cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Photonic Technologies is also planned.
